Summer Camps at the RMSC offer exciting opportunities in a wide variety of STEM topics for young minds ages 2-15. Types of Camp

Different camp levels are available based on the age of your child: 

Mini Camps

AM SESSION: 9–11:30am OR PM SESSION: 1–3:30pm 
Ages: 
2–3 (PWC – Parent with Child, AM Session Only), 3–4, 4–5
Mini Camps are a great opportunity for children to prepare for preschool and for hands-on learning in a social setting. 

Almost Camps

9am-2:30pm

For ‘almost’ a full day, campers enjoy fun learning activities and Museum exploration while preparing for a full-day program! Lunch is not provided by the RMSC. Campers must bring their own lunch.

Full Day campers enjoy their summer days spent on the RMSC campus with hands-on experiments, engaging activities, fun experiences and field-trip excursions depending on the camp choice!  Lunch is not provided by the RMSC. Campers must bring their own lunch.

Animals from A to Zoo — Week 1 (SOLD OUT)

Week 1 (June 26–30)

It’s a whole alphabet of animals!  Explore the animal kingdom letter by letter, learning about 26 different animals.  Find out what they eat, where they live, and what sounds they make.   See the animals that make up RMSC’s collections and meet the reptiles that call RMSC home.

Build It, Break It — Week 2 (SOLD OUT)

Week 2 (July 5–7)

Grab your hard hats and join the crew for some all-around constructive and destructive fun! Use a variety of different building blocks and materials to make (and eventually demolish) basic structures.  How high can you build it?  Can you make one taller than you are?  How can you make it harder to destroy?  Use the simple tools of the trade and discover what it takes to be a pint-sized engineer.

Dinosaur Camp — Week 3 (SOLD OUT)

Week 3 (July 10–14)

Discover dinosaurs like never before!  What did they eat? Where did they live? How big were they really?  Did the run, jump, or even fly?  Dig for fossils, examine footprints, play dino-dress-up, hatch your own dinosaur eggs, and learn about some modern-day animals that resemble dinosaurs.

Week 4 (July 17–21)

Water, water everywhere… Our bodies are 65% water and 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water.  It’s what we drink, where we play, and where some of our animal friends live.  Explore water in all its forms, learn about the sea and all its inhabitants, and learn how important (and fun!) water is for you.

Welcome to the fizzy, foamy world of kiddy chemistry.  What are some things that fizz and foam? What makes them do that?  Play and create with foamy soap, watch some fizzy science demos, mix your first potions, and see fruit fizz and foam.

Snug as a Bug — Week 6 (SOLD OUT)

Did you know there are more insect species on the planet than any of other species!? It’s enough to drive you buggy.  Investigate the itty bitty world of bugs.  Learn about flying flies, bumbling bumblebees, creepy crawly ants, and even itsy bitsy spiders.  Go on a bug hunt, make some teeny tiny friends, and design your own bug to take home and spook your family.

Week 8 (Aug. 14–18)

Can you name the colors of the rainbow? Where do colors come from? Spin the color wheel, mix new colors, experiment with shadows and manipulate light.  Head outside to find all the colors of the rainbow in nature and maybe find a pot of gold!

The Artist in Me — Week 1

Week 1 (June 26–30)

Let your inner artist shine!  Experiment with colors, use chalk and oil to paint, create nature rubbings, make your own paint brush, and find out how animals can be artists.  Explore shapes, lines, and texture as you master the art of science.

Pet Pals — Week 2

Week 2 (July 5–7)

Some animals make great pets. Other animals are best left to live in the wild. Come learn about our favorite pet friends, less traditional pets, and some outrageous options. Explore the world of friendly animals and see what makes them so cool to hold and cuddly to hug. Create your own animal to take home, dress up like your favorite pet, and meet the pets that call the RMSC home.

Silly Science — Week 3

Week 3 (July 10–14)

Not only is science fun, but some of it is downright silly.  How does a mastodon brush his teeth?  What is oobleck?  What makes bubbles so fun? From silly to serious, it’s a whole camp of science demos and experiments.  Discover physics, learn about your senses, experiment with magnets and get a hands-on introduction to all things scientific.

Beak Week — Week 4

Week 4 (July 17–21)

It’s a whole week all about birds!  From beak to talon and everything in between, learn about all the things that make our feathered friends so special.  Investigate what birds eat, how they fly, where they live and the relationship between birds and dinosaurs.  Build bird feeders and birdhouses to take and use at home.

Monster Machines — Week 5

Week 5 (July 24–28)

The 18 wheels on the truck go round and round…  From trucks to tractors to construction equipment, monstrous machines have shaped the world around us.  Find out how heavy equipment is used to construct our cities; how tractors and farm machines help produce our food; and the role that trucks play in our everyday lives.  Use fun-sized versions of the real thing and build your own simple machines.

'Lil Chemist — Week 6

Bang, pop, poof…  Explore the wonders of the world of chemistry!  Explore the states of matter, blow up balloons without your breath, watch volcanoes erupt, and play with slime as you mix, stir, and become a master of making chemical reactions.

Jurassic Journey — Week 7

Week 7 (Aug. 7–11)

Journey back in time 200 million years to when dinosaurs roamed the Earth! Uncover all things dinosaurs—from fossils & footprints to sauropods of all sizes! Dig for bones, design a dinosaur and discover their habitats, how they walked, what they ate and more.

Visit the exhibits at the Strasenburgh Planetarium, discover our place in space, and see what it takes to get to the far corners of our Solar System.

Nature Detectives — Week 1

Week 1 (June 26–30)

Nature is full of mysteries, magic, and science, so grab your magnifying glass and come explore with us.  Learn about trees, flowers, plants, animals, worms, bugs and more! We’ll go outside to watch the weather, go on a bug hunt, create colorful butterflies, and discover the amazing natural world in our own backyards!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles — Week 2

Week 2 (July 5–7)

What makes airplanes fly up into the sky?  What makes trains move and cars go whizzing by? Join us for a three-day journey featuring our three favorite modes of transportation.  Learn about the physics of flight, locomotion, and gravity.   Play games, create art, and visit the Raceways and How Things Work Exhibits in the Museum.

Ice Age Adventures — Week 3

Week 3 (July 10–14)

Travel back in time to the Ice Age when glaciers covered the land and water was frozen.  In a world where snow blanketed everything, large animals like mammoths and mastodons roamed the land.  Check out RMSC’s mastodon, make fossils, explore ice crystals, learn about how people lived in this frozen world, and make your own ancient cave paintings.

Messy Mixtures — Week 4 (SOLD OUT)

Week 4 (July 17–21)

Messy mixtures and righteous reactions are the name of the game!  Get your hands dirty as we make slime, play with foam, mix colors, and make messy art in a week full of crazy chemistry.  First we’ll make smocks (you’re gonna need it!) then it’s time to mix, stir and get messy!

Tall Tales — Week 5

Week 5 (July 24–28)

Discover the science hiding between the pages of your favorite folk tales and short stories!  Is the sky really falling on Chicken Little? Was anyone ever as tall or as hungry as Paul Bunyan? Help Johnny Appleseed plant trees, test the power of wind on the three little pig’s houses, and grow your own beanstalk.  With a little help from the power of pretend, we’ll examine these stories and more!

ABCs of Building — Week 6

Week 6 (July 31–Aug. 4)

Arches, Bridges, Castles and more…  Learn the building basics as you explore the ABCs of kiddy construction.  Create with blocks, Lincoln Logs, KEVA blocks, and so much more!  Become the king or queen of your own castle.  Use simple machines like levers, ramps, and even catapults to build and demolish.

Enroll today in RMSC Medical School. Once we’ve made our own stethoscopes, we’ll get down to the business, learning all about the human body. How strong are bones? Why do we blink? What makes us sick?  How do we stay healthy? Discover the answers to these questions and many more while exploring the human body inside and out.

High Seas Adventure — Week 1

Week 1 (June 26–30)

Keep the wind in your sails and your boat afloat on our voyage of discovery on the high seas! From Vikings to pirates, from Magellan to Cousteau, the sea has always been a source of wonder and adventure!  Anchor’s away as we learn about the technology that explorers used to navigate the seas, examine Columbus’ audacious assertion that the world is round, and journey under the sea to learn about the creatures that call the ocean home.

Week 2 (July 5–7)

If you love dinosaurs than this is the camp for you! Become an “Explorosaurus” and discover what made these extinct creatures so bad to the bone. Go digging for dinosaur bones, learn about dino defenses, and even design your own dinosaur.  Make a fossil to take home, follow footprints and imagine the prehistoric habitat they called home.

Arctic Blast — Week 4

Cool off this summer with a week dedicated to the arctic.  What survives (and thrives!) in a frozen world blanketed by snow and ice?   What is life like for people who live above the Arctic Circle?  Why can’t polar bears and penguins be friends?  Learn about the tundra, polar ice caps, and permafrost.  Examine the science of snow and ice.

Welcome to astronaut training school!  Over the next five days, your training will include launching rockets, experimenting with gravity, and preparing for alien encounters.  You will gain a deeper understanding of the planets in our solar system, the power of the sun, and deep space oddities. Cap off the week with a star show at the Strasenburgh Planetarium and a Space Cadet graduation ceremony.

EV3 Robotics Explorers — Weeks 1, 4, 6, & 8 (SOLD OUT)

Use the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robotics system to build your own robot.  Working as a team, you will build and learn to control a sophisticated robot.  Get a hands-on introduction to programming and discover everything that the field of robotics has in store for you.    Show off your work at the end of the week by competing in a series of engineering challenges in front of your friends and family.

Time Travelers — Week 3 (SOLD OUT)

We’ve done it!  We’ve invented time travel and you’re invited to join us on our first voyage!  Head back in time to see how societies around the world and throughout time used science and how their discoveries shaped our world today.  Get wrapped up in the mummy science of ancient Egypt, learn about the engineering wonders of the Roman Empire, and set sail with the explorers who mapped our hemisphere.  Visit renaissance Italy, the ancient orient, 19th century Rochester, Haudenosaunee villages, and more!

Test It, Try It — Week 3 (SOLD OUT)

Performing experiments is one of the most fun and most engaging ways for campers to experience science.  Test It, Try It is a week-long camp dedicated to science experiments both in and outside of the laboratory.  Grab your goggles for some chemistry fun.  Step outside for hands–on physics.  Live the scientific method as you construct a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, observe and analyze the results, and develop your own conclusion to the mysteries all around us.

Endangered and Extinct — Week 3

 
Week 3 (July 10–14)

What do gorillas, rhinos, and leopards all have in common?  These and other endangered animals could all go the way of the dodo if we’re not careful! Find out about extinct animals, both big and small, majestic and wacky.  Learn why they went away and how we can keep more species from joining their ranks.  How do animals adapt to survive in a changing world?  Why are arctic animals so frequently endangered?  And most importantly, why are hippos so hungry, hungry?

Don’t just play the game, DESIGN it!! Creativity and innovation are at the controls this week! From Minecraft to Ozobots and beyond—technology is at your fingertips as you learn the building basics of computer coding through gameplay! Spend time on-line and off-line each day.

Our Blue Planet — Week 6

Investigate the mysterious marvels of our great planet.  Examine the ground under your feet and the blue sky above.  Explore the cosmos beyond our Earth and the mysteries of the deep blue sea.  Study wild weather, natural disasters, and the magnificent animals that populate our world.  Wander the RMSC gardens, check out the Expedition Earth gallery, and take a field trip to the Seneca Park Zoo.

Week 7 (Aug. 7–11)

Get ready for a week-long expedition through our solar system and beyond.  First, master the basics of rocket propulsion, gravity, and Earth’s atmosphere.  Then blast off into space with stops on the moon, Mars, the rings of Saturn, an asteroid or two, and other destinations unknown, sending home a postcard at each stop.

Friends of the Forest at Cumming Nature Center — Week 7 (SOLD OUT)

Leave no rock or log unturned, no tree or flower unidentified! Become one with the forest habitat this week as you explore the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of this region. Discover clues hidden in Mother Nature to help you identify the trees, plants and animals found at Cumming Nature Center.

What’s more fun than spending the day playing inside a fort that you built? Doing it for a whole week! Design, build it and play inside forts of all sorts this week! From castles to great walls, fortify your knowledge of historical engineering and explore through play.  See how fortifications are breached by experimenting with catapults, trebuchets, and more.

What’s underneath your feet?  Grab your shovel and get to the bottom of that question.  Dig down and find fossils, bugs, rocks, artifacts, caverns, hidden gems, and intricate root systems.  Learn about animals that burrow, imagine what it would be like to be a miner working hundreds of feet below ground, and visit RMSC’s archaeology site at Cumming Nature Center.  There’s a whole world of amazing things right below your feet just waiting to be discovered!

It’s a case of “Who Done It” here at the RMSC! Expand your crime-solving and forensic science skills.  You’ll have to think like an agent, crack codes, collect clues, and question witnesses.  Employ crime-solving techniques like brushing for fingerprints, testing blood samples, and extracting DNA as you crack the case of the missing artifact.

Whether the weather is cold or whether the weather is hot...  Investigate the world of weather, from the bright and beautiful to the wild and crazy.  Rain, snow, sleet, hail—learn all about weather that falls from the sky.  Examine the science behind the destructive power of hurricanes, blizzards, thunderstorms, and more.  Hold a tornado in your hand, make it snow in August, and witness singing lightning in a special Electricity Theater presentation.  ...Whatever the weather, we'll weather the weather; whether we like it or not!

Spycraft — Week 1 (SOLD OUT)

Week 1 (June 26–30)

Being a spy isn’t all glamorous parties and death-defying stunts like in the movies.  Most of it relies on highly sophisticated set of skills known as spycraft.  Turn everyday objects into a hiding place for a stolen microchip.  Assume a false identity and make an information drop. Learn how to code your messages and break coded messages that you intercept.  Visit Q branch to make your own spy gadgets.  But most importantly, do all of that (and more) without getting caught!

May the Force be with you — Week 2

Embrace the Force and examine the science behind the Star Wars story. Use the epic movie franchise as a guide to discover physics: learn about rocket propulsion, real-life forces, space travel, and more.  Similar to light sabers, see how we concentrate light in the field of photonics.  Make your own version of Luke’s animatronic hand, build a mini R2D2, and enjoy a special presentation in Electricity Theater.  This camp will be the best Jedi training anywhere outside of the Dagobah System.

Can duct tape really fix everything?  Become a myth buster as you learn to separate fact from fiction and test for the truth using trial and error and the scientific method. Investigate the strength of various materials, see what floats, flies, and explodes, and examine the wisdom of the proverbial old wives.  Brainstorm, design, test and build your own experiments to reveal if these myths are confirmed or busted.

It’s a wild, wild world full of amazing animals, fascinating weather, geological wonders, and extreme elements.  Learn about our place in space, explore the mysteries of the deep blue sea, and venture into the tall forests on a field trip to the Cumming Nature Center. 

One day of this camp takes place at Cumming Nature Center.  Check-in will be at RMSC, with a bus departing for CNC at 8:00am and returning to RMSC at approximately 4:45pm.

Art Smarts — Week 3 (SOLD OUT)

Week 3 (July 10–14)

It’s amazing how much science there is in art and how much art there is in science.  Paint with a pendulum, make splatter art, use electricity to brighten up your project, design using technology, and inject math into your art.  Create art that is not only inspired by our natural world, but created with it.  Start from scratch, making your own paper, paints, and brushes to create a masterpiece that is uniquely yours.

EV3 Robotics Challengers — Weeks 3, 5, & 7

Work as a team to build and program your own robot using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robotics systems.  Once your robot is built, program it to conquer a series of engineering challenges.  Show off your work at the end of the week with a FIRST Robotics-style competition on Friday afternoon.

Week 4 (July 17–21)

Most frequently known as the Flower City, Rochester has also been called the Flour City, The World's Image Center, Kodak City, and Baseball City, USA, among others.  Find out why as we explore how science has made our beloved hometown so special.  Discover the science of film, photography, and imaging.  Dive into history and learn about the flour mills that once dominated our economy and the highly scientific Erie Canal.  Figure out what photonics is and how it will shape our future.  Spend Tuesday downtown on a field trip to Frontier Field to watch the Rochester Red Wings.

Grossology 101 — Week 6

Sometimes science is just plain gross.  Study up on the grossest of human functions (and yes, we do mean poop, puke, and snot).  See what makes animals just as gross as we are and understand life sciences in a whole new way by exploring decomposition and digging for creepy crawly insects. Put your outdoor skills to the test as you learn to survive and thrive in the wilderness. Archaeology at Cumming Nature Center — Week 8

Explore working in the field of archaeology.  Step out of the classroom and into the field. Uncover the history of the early pioneers as you dig at the grounds of their former settlement once known as Frost Town.  Unearth real artifacts, learn how to properly handle delicate objects, and display your findings.  This camp is designed for first time archeologists to get their feet wet in a new field of study and their hands dirty at the CNC dig site.

Project Launch — Week 4

Week 4 (July 17–21)

Siege the day and explore the power of projectiles! Discover the dynamics of potential energy and the math and physics to propel objects to great heights, across long distances or with amazing accuracy. Each day campers will build their own miniature versions of a variety of projectile launching devices and will launch a full-size catapult at the end of the week!

Special Effects — Week 4

Week 4 (July 17–21)

From RMSC Studios comes a production entirely of your own creation!  Step into the back lot and work as a team to create a short film, including lighting, filming, and editing.  Design costumes and learn the art of monster make-up to add an element of campy fun to your movie.  Use science to create special effects like fog, flames, or even explosions.  Once the project is complete, you will host the world premiere of your film on Friday afternoon.

Artist's Studio: Miniature Worlds — Week 5

Week 5 (July 24–28)

Museum dioramas are windows into miniature worlds—these works of art bring stories to life through science! With the museum as your laboratory, this creative workshop is a hands-on experience in the research, design and construction of diorama making. Step into the art studio and roll up your sleeves for a messy week of sculpting, painting and modeling with materials like plaster, paint and foam.  In conjunction with the ongoing restoration of the RMSC’s original diorama “Rochester in 1838”, you’ll work side by side with one of the leading diorama artists in the field to make your very own miniature model of the Erie Canal to be displayed in a museum exhibition.  Explore scale and proportion, engineering, history and more in this new camp that is part art, part science and all things dioramas!

RMSC Comic Con — Week 6

Week 6 (July 31–Aug. 4)

It’s all your favorite pastimes jammed into one dynamic camp.  Get lost in the world of comic books and fantasy.  Delve into hard core gaming—play board games, card games, trading card games, logic games, dice games, and more; even make your own board game.  Create fan fiction and music.  Slip into character for table top role playing games and live action role playing (LARPing).   Design a costume and, if you choose to, wear it to the convention on Friday.

Virtual Reality — Week 7 (SOLD OUT)

Imagination becomes reality, virtually, this week! Test and model real life structures and scenarios with the use of Minecraft, Game Maker and expand your virtual reality with real time exploration in museum exhibits. Design, make and showcase 3D printed and other virtual creations and explore the growing use of virtual reality technology around the world and in our community.

Discover what it takes to survive in the wilderness. Construct outdoor shelters, build solar stills, and light a fire with just one match. Learn to navigate the forests at Cumming Nature Center with and without a compass.  Gain valuable experience in first aid and bushcraft.  

An optional overnight on Thursday ($25 add-on) will provide the opportunity to put your newly acquired survival skills to the test.

EV3 Robotics Innovators — Week 9

Week 9 (Aug. 21–25)

Take EV3 Robotics to another level!  Challenge yourself to build a robotic elephant, puppy, monster, crane, or other advanced robot.  But building is only half the challenge!  Program your robot to complete tasks to impress the judges.  Display your work at our First Annual EV3 Expo on Friday afternoon. 

Previous robotics experience is helpful, but not required. Learn More about EV3 Robotics

Extended Care Options

Extended care is available Monday--Friday for Almost Camps (AM only) and Full Day Camps and is NOT available for Mini Camps. Registration for Extended Care is required. Pre-registration upon registering for the camp week is encouraged. 

AM Care

7:45-9am $20/week

Supervised, unstructured playtime monitored by Summer Fun staff. Staff will socialize and interact with campers; however, staff-led activities do not occur at this time.

PM Care

4:15-5:30pm $25/week

New! For a more structured, exploration time in smaller group settings you and your camper can choose the elective that’s right for you! Choose between Movie Buffs, the Reading Room, KEVA Club and Board Gamers. Please note that PM Care is NOT available for Mini or Almost Camps.

How do I register?

Online registration is the fastest and preferred method to register for camps. Find the camp you would like to attend below and click on the "Register" button once Registration opens. Credit Card payments accepted.

You may also call 585.697.1942 to register by phone with your credit cardor stop by our Welcome Center at 657 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607 to fill out a hard copy of the registration form and pay by cash, check or credit card. Full payment is due upon registration. 

Campers are grouped based on the age of the child at the time of camp. To secure a space for your child, we recommend early registration. Enrollment is limited to ensure each camper receives the highest quality camp experience, and we do not have a waiting list. Registration closes two weeks prior to the start of camp, or when enrollment has reached its maximum capacity.

Are there scholarships available? 

Limited need-based scholarships are currently available.

Are there member discounts?
