The library's holdings reflect the strengths of the museum's collections: Iroquois studies, early Euro-American technology, Rochester businesses, fashion and costume, and museology. The library also owns architectural drawings, nineteenth and twentieth-century personal diaries, and one of the nation's largest collections of Victorian valentines. Its Albert R. Stone Negative Collection comprises almost 14,000 images of Rochester life from 1904 to 1936, and is the most frequently requested collection.
The following practicum and internships are non-paid positions that offer an ideal opportunity for the student or graduate of a library/information services program who is interested in librarianship in a special collections environment. Students can earn school credit. Cataloging PracticumCreate original catalog records for a special collection of family journals (ca. 1864–1914), following established local procedures in accordance with AACR2, OCLC practice, and MARC tagging rules.Research InternshipWe have many research opportunities available, based upon interests of the intern. One example: Create abstracts or summaries of an appraiser's evaluation of the library's Danforth-Huntington Journals Collection, which is comprised of 13 bound manuscript volumes dated from 1864–1914. There is a typescript available for the volumes.Archives InternshipExamine and organize a varied collection of photographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and other ephemeral resources. Research and create a finding aid for the collection, and then create an original MARC record describing the collection according to AACR2 and MARC21 format standards. Duties will include evaluating condition of the materials and taking steps for proper preservation.Indexing InternshipCreate subject and name indexes for one issue, volume (10 issues), or many volumes of our museum publication, Museum Service.

Exhibits Design Assist in the design of exhibits furniture and kiosks. Industrial design (3D) training preferred.
Exhibits Graphic Design Assist in the design and production of graphics for the museum. Graphics training preferred.
Exhibits Implementation Assist in the creation and building of exhibits and exhibits environments. Fine Arts background preferred; carpentry skills a plus.
Exhibits Maintenance Assist in maintaining exhibits. All-around handy person preferred; mechanical and electrical skills a plus.
