Be the Dinosaur: Life in the Cretaceous
In the Riedman GalleryPresented by M&T Bank
Experience life as a dinosaur! An innovative blend of traditional exhibits and advanced computer simulation takes you 65+ million years back in time to become a "living, breathing" dinosaur in an accurate ancient ecosystem.
With a distinguished panel of advisors, Eureka Exhibits, LLC has created Be the Dinosaur: Life in the Cretaceous to focus on what it is that visitors, particularly children, most want to know about dinosaurs—What did a dinosaur do all day? What was it like to be one?
Designed with the assistance of world-renowned paleontologists, this science experience brings dinosaurs alive through the magic of interactive digital simulation. Take a seat in a state-of-the-art Be the Dinosaur™ Simulator Pod with an interactive screen. Experience the beauty and adventure of the world of the dinosaurs depicted in all its High-Definition glory. You are the dinosaur star of the show!
Explore the exhibit and learn about the Cretaceous environment. What plants and animals lived there? What did different kinds of dinosaurs eat? How did they find food, and what behaviors helped them survive? The more you learn in the exhibition, the longer your dinosaur simulation will last as you find out what you need to survive in the Cretaceous world.
Plus these special experiences for young visitors:
-- A "Dino Nest" with costumes and role-playing opportunities.
-- The "Once Upon a Cretaceous Time" magnet board, where children create their own dinosaur environments.
-- The "Dinosaur Book Basket "-- select a book and learn more about favorite dinos!

Meet the Dinosaurs
No dinosaur exhibit would be complete without giant creatures that move, roar, and seem to come alive before your eyes! They're waiting on Bausch Hall's third floor:
Dimetrodon
Dimetrodon lived 280 to 265 million years ago in the Permian Period. This animal was actually a pelycosaur, more closely related to mammals than to true reptiles. At 9 ft. long and 5 ft. tall, the animatronic model is nearly life-size.
Stegosaurus
Stegosaurus lived in the Jurassic Period, 150 to 145 million years ago. The lifelike exhibit model is 11-1/2 ft. long and 6 ft. tall—about one-third actual size.
Apatosaurus with Nest, Eggs and Babies
This gentle Apatosaurus moves only slightly, making her and her family a terrific photo opportunity. At 26' long and 7' tall, she is about one-third actual size.

Fossil IchthyosaurSee a genuine fossil ichthyosaur from the RMSC collection. While dinosaurs ruled the land, the ichthyosaurs ("fish lizards") shared the seas with other goups of large marine reptiles. The RMSC specimen, Stenopterygius longpipes, is from the Early Jurassic Period. See it on Bausch Hall's third floor in Meet the Dinosaurs.
Visit Expedition Earth on the museum's first floor for more about dinosaurs!
See Albertosaurus, the fossil dinosaur from the RMSC's collection, on display at the north (East Avenue) end of the gallery. Albertosaurus ("Alberta lizard") was a relative of T. rex that lived in North America during the Late Cretaceous Period, 70–90 million years ago.
Did dinosaurs ever live here in western New York? Explore this mystery in Expedition Earth. Find out what scientists think the answer may be, and why. See fossil dinosaur tracks from the RMSC collection.
