CUMMING NATURE CENTER
SCHOOL PROGRAMS 2007–2008Bring your class on an unforgettable journey into the Bristol Hills of western New York with a trip to the Cumming Nature Center. Our hands-on programs will bring science to life and are designed to complement the New York State Department of Education learning standards in science. (All programs are designed around elementary and intermediate MST: science learning standards 1 and 4. Specific program standards are available upon request.)
We recommend 2 hours for each program, although the length can be adjusted. Indoor tables and picnic tables are available for bag lunches.

This program will take your class into the woods to discover how all living things are connected through the food chain. Students will discover the relationships between consumers, producers, and decomposers.
SENSING NATURE Grades Pre K–3
This program will introduce students to the beauty and complexity of the natural world using all of their senses. Students will have the opportunity to engage in activities involving sight, sound, smell, and touch.
FALLING LEAVES Grades 3–7 (September–November only)
During this program your class will have the opportunity to explore why trees lose their leaves in the autumn and how animals prepare for the winter.WINTER ECOLOGY Grades 4–7 (December–March only)
Explore the magic of the woods in winter. Students will examine plant and animal adaptations to winter survival and look at tracks and other evidence of animal activities. NATURAL ART Grades 2–7
This program is designed to enhance students' understanding of nature through artistic expression. Students will explore the finer details of the forest through various art forms, including nature journaling.POLLINATORSGrades Pre K–3 (June–September only)
What exactly are pollinators and what would the world be like without them? In this program students will have the opportunity to explore the wonders of honeybees, birds, and other pollinators.MAPLE SUGARING Grades Pre K–7 (March–April only)
Students learn about the production of maple syrup—a uniquely American food made since the times of the Iroquois. Learn about sap and how sugar is created by green plants.ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITIESGrades 6–7
This program allows students to compare field, forest, and pond communities to gain insight into habitat, succession, food webs, and population dynamics.DESIGN YOUR OWN PROGRAM Grades Pre K–7
