Facing RACE Days

A Special Program offered by the RMSC as part of the Facing Race Embracing Equity community initiative (www.faceraceroc.org).

DIVERSIFY your students' experience with this special program. We will coordinate the visit of your students with that of students from a different school district so that they can visit the exhibit together and engage in joint discussions.

Who and When?

• Grades 5            February 5, 6, or 7, 2013
• Grades 10-12:    March 5 or 6, 2013

Note: Must be able to be at the RMSC on the established date for at least 2 hours.

You will apply for one of these dates. Once you have been chosen for the program and assigned a date and time you will not be able to change it.

Cost:

All teachers whose applications are accepted will receive a full scholarship for the number of students accepted to the program:
$10 per student & $150 per bus.

Note: The $10 per student includes admission, so that teachers may choose to visit other exhibits on a self-guided basis on the day of their program, contingent upon availability. Additional programs will have an associated additional cost. Click here for school program fees.

How Many Students Can I Apply To Bring?

Apply to have about 20-40 students (1 or 2 classrooms) accepted to the program. About 40 students will usually fit on one bus.

What happens at the Museum?

With students from another district, your students will:

• Actively explore the RACE: Are We So Different? exhibit  (25 minutes)
• Investigate freedom seekers in the Flight to Freedom: Rochester’s Underground Railroad exhibit (25 minutes)
• Attend the theater performance, Race to the Finish Line, performed by the RMSC Players , leading into a Facilitated Discussion on race (45 minutes)
  

Qualification for the Program:

1.   Enrollment in limited. Acceptance will be based upon 1) order of reception of application, 2) matching of grade levels and time slots from school districts, and 3) availability of positions. 

2. Teachers must commit to attending one  of the  three FREE Professional Development workshops: Facing Race—Embracing Equity

Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 2:30-5:30pm*, or
Thursday, December 13, 2012, 4:00-7:00pm, or
Thursday, January 10, 2013, 4:00-7:00pm
(Note: Teachers participating in Facing Race Days should try to attend the December 5th workshop.)

Workshops confer 3 professional developmoent credits.
(Please note: Requirements for the granting of professional development credit varies by school district. It is the responsibiliby of the teacher to pre-arrange with the district that credits will be applied.)

Enrollment in the workshops is limited. Teachers whose students will be participating in Facing Race Days will be given 1st priority. 

3. In addition, teachers must commit to engaging their students in Pre- and Post- visit activities. Example activitites will be provided on-line and at the wokrshop.
