2013 Full-Day Summer Camps for 9-11 Year-Olds
(children entering grades 4-6)
Camps run Monday–Friday, 9am–4pm and include programs and activities in the Planetarium and Museum (for camps meeting at the Museum) or the Cumming Nature Center trails (for camps at the Nature Center).
Please bring a bag lunch, as lunch is not provided by the RMSC
- The RMSC offers bussing for Nature Center camps for an additional cost of $25. Pre-registration is required. Check in for campers riding the bus is at the RMSC beginning at 8:15am.
- Check in for all camps, except Nature Center camps, are at the Eisenhart Auditorium lobby at 9am.
- Check in for Nature Center camps is at the Welcome Center in the Cumming Nature Center lobby at 9am or at the RMSC at 8:15am if you are taking advantage of bussing.
Extended Care,a time of supervised but unstructured play, is staffed by our Youth Program staff and provided at the RMSC or Cumming Nature Center from 8–9am and/or 4–5:30pm. Registration required.
Cost = $20 per child, per week (morning or afternoon session)

Refund/Cancellation Policy:
- Full payment is required at registration (which includes $50 non-refundable processing fee for full-day camps and a $20 non-refundable processing fee for mini-camps and almost camps).
- $100 deposit is retained in the case of withdrawal from full-day camps after June 1st and up to two weeks before camp.
- NO REFUNDS given during the 10 business days before a camp.

Astronomy Basics
Discover and explore the make-up of the universe. Investigate the planets and our solar system. Build and launch many types of rockets. See star shows at the Strasenburgh Planetarium and learn what it takes to be an astronomer.

Game Show Science
Learn the scientific secrets behind some of the most popular game shows from the past and present in this brand new camp. Experiment with physics as you try to complete challenges in 60 seconds. Learn about how your eyes and brain work as you explore optical illusions. Run obstacle courses, answer fun questions, and ring bells and sound alarms in this exciting camp.

Animation
Explore all things animation! Participate in creating a stop motion animated movie. Learn about cartoon storyboards and create your own. Manipulate clay to create a story and characters, and then shoot a movie. Investigate C.G.I. and learn about what role it has in the modern movie making process.

Intro To Chemistry
Begin to explore the wonders and fun of chemistry. Learn about polymers, chemical reactions, physical properties, states of mater, and other exciting elements as you become a chemist for the week.

Science Buster
Taking our lead from the show Mythbusters, this week is all about busting or supporting popular science myths. Perform cool experiments, build some challenges, and blow things up to investigate the truth behind some popular science myths.

Discover and explore what makes up the universe. Investigate the planets and our solar system. Launch rockets and learn about propulsion. Get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Strasenburg Planetarium and see star shows. Learn what it takes to be an astronomer.

Engineering 101
Learn about the world of engineering, architecture, inventing, and the engineering process. Create super structures, towers and bridges. Learn what it takes to be an inventor and make your own inventions. Take a walking tour of East Ave.

July 22 - 26
Intro to Robotics
Use the LEGO NXT robot kits to build and program your own robot. Compete in several robot challenges. Learn about the engineering process and gain valuable teamwork skills in this fun-filled week of NXT robotics.

Woman in Science
This camp is just for girls! Explore different fields of science, including engineering, chemistry, physics, biology and astronomy. Learn about science and yourself. Study female scientist role models. Take a field trip to the Women’s Rights National Historic Park.

Theater (2 week camp, July 22 - August 2)
This two-week camp gives the aspiring actor or actress a taste of what theater is all about: auditions, rehearsals, costumes, makeup and set building. Put the skills you learned to the test in a camp-ending original performance.

Advanced Robotics

The Physics of Flight
Find out how things fly when we explore the physics of flight. Launch methanol cannons, shoot water rockets over 60 feet high, fly and drop things off of a 40 foot tower, and use solar energy to lift things off the ground.

Gross Science
This camp is all-around gross science fun. Make icky and sticky substances. Hunt for bugs, worms and other critters. Learn about some of the gross things that animals and humans do, and make some edible things that will be sure to get reactions.

Wilderness Survival
Located at the Cumming Nature Center in Naples, NY
Discover what it takes to survive in the wilderness. Construct outdoor shelters, build solar stills, light a fire with one match, learn about wild edibles and gain valuable orienteering techniques.

August 5 - 9
VEX Robotics
Step up to the next level of robot design. Build complicated robots, learn about gear ratios, and overcome team challenges! Note: Knowledge of VEX robotics and NXT robotics are helpful but not necessary.

Wizards Magic
How did they do that? Find out how you can use chemical reactions, optical illusions, and physics to make wizards’ magic. Create potions, experiment with levitation, and more as you attend wizard school at the RMSC. Enjoy a visit from a local magician.

Predators and Prey
Learn all about animals; what they eat, how they hunt, why they play and how they move. Discover the differences between warm and cold-blooded creatures. Perform experiments to find out how animals hide and stay warm. Learn about flight and launch your own flying things off of towers. Enjoy a trip to the Seneca Park Zoo.

Archaeology
Located at the Cumming Nature Center in Naples, NY
Can you dig it? Learn about the world of archaeology. Explore what it takes to become an archaeologist and what it’s like in the field. Learn the history of the area once known as Frost Town. Dig at the foundations of some of the areas earliest settling pioneers. Gain hands-on experience planning an excavation, opening test units and collecting real artifacts!

Discovering Paleontology
Begin your paleontology career here. Learn what it takes to go out into the field and collect fossils. Discover how fossils are formed. Spend time with our mastodons and dinosaurs. Use the RMSC collections to gain an understanding of paleontology and geology. Take a field trip to Penn Dixie fossil site.
