Explore Hands-on Math Activities During Pi Day3 at the Rochester Museum & Science Center
ROCHESTER, NY—Visitors to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) immerse themselves in a hands-on celebration of all things mathematics during the Pi Day3 family program. In commemoration of international Pi Day, whole families have fun with the math hidden in everyday life. The event takes place from, fittingly, 3:14pm through 6:28pm on Friday, March 14 (special extended hours) and from 12pm through 4pm on Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16.
Families are invited to calculate with staff and volunteers as they play fun mind games, learn cool math tricks and discover some of the secrets behind being a great mathematician. It wouldn't be "pi" without "pie," so visitors also have fun with the mathematics of baking. In addition, visitors meet professionals from across the Rochester community who use math in their jobs and learn about their careers.
Pi (the Greek letter "π") is a symbol used to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The number is approximately 3.14159, making it obvious as to why the international celebration of Pi Day is observed on 3/14.
Visitors are also encouraged to celebrate Pi Day by visiting the Math Midway exhibition on display through March 17. Math Midway, a carnival-themed, hands-on traveling exhibition, is dedicated to the amazing world of mathematics. Dynamic exhibits encourage mental exercise, which stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity and reveal mathematical wonders.
The Pi Day3 program is free with regular museum admission: $13 adults, $12 seniors and college students with ID, $11 ages 3 to 18, free for children under 3 and RMSC members. Admission to the Math Midway exhibition is also free with regular museum admission. Check rmsc.org for more information.
