Rochester Museum & Science Center Earns Five Grants for Collections
ROCHESTER, NY—Within the past two months, the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) was awarded five grants in support of the more than 1.2 million collection objects it holds in trust for the community. The grants, which total nearly $290,000, help to cover some of the costs associated with preserving, organizing, documenting and communicating the collections.
"Our collections convey the stories of our community, and beyond, so we are very fortunate to receive these generous gifts to help us care for them," said Kate Bennett, president, RMSC. "We look to our community members and their giving spirit for the additional support that will be needed to match some of these gifts."
The grants allow the RMSC to improve its collections in many ways, ultimately providing for an enhanced visitor experience. The grants awarded to the RMSC came from five organizations: Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS), National Park Service (NPS), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Rochester Area Community Foundation and Museumwise. Details about the grants are included below.
Museums for America grant from IMLS in the amount of $145,085—Under this grant, RMSC will consolidate multiple legacy databases and digitize paper records into one centralized collections management database. These activities will improve collections access, preserve collections documentation and help staff manage and share information on the more than 1 million objects in the natural sciences, archaeology and history collections.
Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Consultation/Documentation grant from the National Park Service (NPS) in the amount of $73,018—This grant allows RMSC to review and document its Southwest anthropology collections in consultation with representatives from the Pima-Maricopa, Apache, Navajo, Hopi and Zuni tribes of Arizona and New Mexico. This project will result in the identification of objects that are eligible for repatriation to these groups under NAGPRA law.
Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections planning grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in the amount of $50,000—With this grant, the RMSC will develop a strategy to better preserve at-risk collections. Through consultation with a museum space planner, conservator and two environmental engineers, the RMSC will create a plan detailing a space-efficient, sustainable and state-of-the-art storage area for its most vulnerable humanities collections.
Rochester Area Community Foundation Historic Preservation Fund in the amount of $18,174—With this grant, the RMSC will improve artifact preservation and interpretation of the cultural heritage of this region. Enhanced security and updated content will be added to the At the Western Door exhibition, improving the visitor experience.
Get Set! grant from Museumwise in the amount of $3,000—Under this grant, the RMSC will hire a consultant to guide the collections staff in organizing and implementing an educational program for the RMSC Board of Trustees. The repeatable program will provide current and future board members with a clear understanding of how the RMSC historical collections can be used to create context for science and technology concepts.
