New Focus on Trees Program at RMSC Cumming Nature Center
ROCHESTER, NY—Visitors to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) Cumming Nature Center (CNC) have the opportunity to experience a new exploratory program on trees. Focus on Trees, a series designed for all ages, features a guided walk with Dave Gotham, director, CNC. Walks take place from 9:30am to 12pm on July 27 and August 10 and will continue in the fall.
Each informative woodland walk will highlight a specific tree species. Trees are a very precious resource. They provide lumber, medicine, oxygen, heat, paper, wildlife cover and food. The RMSC Cumming Nature Center encompasses 900 acres in the Bristol Hills and features mostly forestland covered by a great variety of trees.
Summer programs are included below:
9:30am–12pm: Saturday, July 27—Plantations
Participants hike to six plantations and discuss their potential economic benefits and the drawbacks. Once considered to be a revolutionary idea, plantations are now controversial.
9:30am–12pm: Saturday August 10—The Oaks
Participants hike several miles across the CNC property and visit some very large oak trees. In addition, walk attendees discuss wood usage, economic purposes and wildlife food the trees provide.
Program fee: Free for RMSC members. A donation of $3 per person or $10 per family is requested for the general public.
In addition, the CNC features several other guided hikes this summer. They include:
Senior Sojourn (Easy Pace)
9:30-10:30am: Wednesdays, July 10, August 14
Serendipity Walk (Moderate Pace)
9:30–11:30am: Saturdays, July 13, August 17
Identification Series Walk
July 20—Topic: Beaver Facts and Habitat
August 24—Topic: Ferns
