Family Fridays Feature Science Behind Myths, Music and Everyday Fun at the Rochester Museum & Science Center
ROCHESTER, NY—"Family Fridays" programs at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) offer visitors hands-on experiences to explore their creativity as they discover the science and technology behind myths, super villains, transportation, sports and other popular topics. Visitors discern the mysteries of Loch Ness, probe through the latest gadgets, and reveal the science of magic, among other activities. New activities and experiences are featured from 12–4pm each Friday in July and August. The full schedule is included below:
July 5: Around the World in 80 Ways
Visitors see how many ways people can travel from here to there. From planes and trains to cars and bikes, visitors have fun with the many modes of transportation used to get around the world. Visitors also learn about different vehicles used every day by building their own, or even inventing a new one to add to the list!
July 12: Super Villains
Visitors get "despicable" and come dressed as their favorite fictional villain as RMSC staff and visitors explore all those wonderful gadgets that make being bad so much fun.
July 19: Make it!
Visitors explore their creative side and see what they can make. RMSC provides the materials—participants provide the ideas! Visitors learn about the history of important inventions and how they can become the next big inventor.
July 26: Music Madness
Experience the science of sound and music! Visitors build their own musical instruments as they enjoy performances by local musicians. Visitors learn how vibrations made by percussion, brass, and woodwind instruments lead to music.
August 2: Game Show Fun
Visitors join RMSC staff and play some favorite game shows. Visitors have opportunities to challenge friends to a game of Family Feud, test their physical skills in a Minute-to-Win-It challenge or even try their luck at RMSC Jeopardy!
August 9: Magic and Illusion
There's nothing up our sleeves, yet PRESTO! Visitors try their hand at magic and illusion as they learn the art and science behind some favorite tricks. Visitors also learn magic tricks that they can do at home, and see magic shows by local magician The Amazing Magic Joe. Is it science or magic? Maybe it is both.
August 16: Myths and Mysteries
Visitors become an RMSC Mystery Hunter and try to solve some of the greatest mysteries from around the world. By using a combination of fact-finding, and forensics to decipher fact from fiction, visitors investigate modern myths like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and Atlantis. They learn what is real and what isn't as they discover some of the science behind ancient myths.
August 23: Tech at Your Fingertips
From Weatherbug© to Twitter, people have technology at their fingertips—but how does it work? Visitors explore the computer in their pocket as experts explain how smart phones work and how apps are created. Visitors also explore the evolution of gaming from first generation to PCs, and next generation to portables. Can't get enough of Angry Birds? Try a real-life version!
August 30: Sports Science
Participants get in the spirit and explore the science and physiology behind some favorite sports! Visitors test out their raw athleticism with activities like our shuttle run, vertical jump and others. They see how they "measure up" to some of the greatest athletes in history.
In addition to "Family Fridays" activities, new Hi-Def simulator rides are available for a limited-time during the summer. Most* special rides are $1 per person (members included). Visitors can enjoy the Lake Ontario ride daily for free.

Swim, dive and play with dolphins in the big blue sea.

Join these furry little friends as they race their tiny cars through your house!

Turtle Adventure (NEW Hi-Def ride)
Follow a sea turtle through his exciting life adventures!

Discover our NEW stand-up simulation
Experience the power of 75mph hurricane-force winds!
*$2 charge per simulation (members included). Several people can experience at the same time for the price of one simulation.
"Family Fridays" programs are free with regular Museum admission: $13 adults, $12 seniors and college students with ID, $11 ages 3 to 18, free for children under 3 and RMSC members.
