ROCHESTER,
NY—A selection of objects from the world-class collections at the Rochester
Museum & Science Center (RMSC) will be on display in an exhibit entitled, On the Trails of the Iroquois, opening
in Bonn, Germany. Sarah LeCount, collections manager, RMSC, will help install
the loaned items in the exhibit. The exhibit opens on March 22 and will be on
display through August 4 in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal
Republic of Germany. Later, the collections will travel to Berlin.
"We
have a remarkable collection of Iroquoian items—our Seneca ethnological and
archaeological collections are perhaps the best and most comprehensive in the
world," said George McIntosh, director of collections, RMSC. "It's an honor
that an exhibition hall across the ocean recognizes the value of our unique
collections and wants to feature them in this outstanding exhibit for their
broad, international visitor base."
The
RMSC collections featured include 61 ethnological and archaeological items,
such as a pair of cornhusk dolls, a girl's overdress with silver brooches,
beaded skirt and leggings, and 19 paintings by artist Ernie Smith. The
paintings were completed as part of the RMSC's Indian Arts Project. Also, prominent among the objects are items from
the Lewis Henry Morgan collection. A team from ARTEX, a fine art service
provider based in New York City, is crating the objects.
On the Trails of the Iroquois undertakes
a comprehensive search for the trails of the Iroquois throughout the centuries.
Warriors and gifted diplomats, the Iroquois, who originally inhabited the
present-day state of New York, successfully kept the European colonial armies
at bay during the 17th and 18th centuries. At the same
time the formation of their influential intertribal confederacy inspired
European intellectual history. Historical paintings and drawings, precious
ethnographic objects, and extraordinary examples of Iroquois contemporary art
tell their varied history, characterized by war, trade,
Christian missions, loss of land, and isolation on reservations.
NOTE:
Sarah LeCount will be
