Face of Earth Star Show at RMSC
Strasenburgh Planetarium Offers a New Perspective on Our Home in Space
ROCHESTER,
NY—A new star show opening at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC)
Strasenburgh Planetarium takes visitors on a journey above Earth's atmosphere
for a look down at spectacular views of our planet's landmarks, weather and
natural wonders. Face of Earth opens
to the public on Saturday, March 2.
"From Earth we all can look up at the wonders of the sky,
but there's only a select group of people that have the opportunity to look
down at our planet from above," said Steve Fentress, director, Strasenburgh
Planetarium, RMSC. "The Strasenburgh Planetarium has the unique ability to
bring visitors beyond our atmosphere to experience Earth from a new
perspective, and audiences feel as though they are flying through outer space
at the same time."
Face of Earth combines fantastic
imagery, inspirational music and scientific facts into a one-hour show
experience. Through a high-resolution video system, audience members escape
Earth's atmosphere to explore our home world through giant images taken by
Earth-observing satellites and astronauts aboard the International Space
Station. To the accompaniment of an eclectic mix of music, audiences see
Hurricane Sandy from above, watch the northern lights as astronauts see them,
and peer down on glaciers, volcanic eruptions, ocean currents, seasonal
changes, evidence of climate change, city lights and familiar landmarks.
As
with all star shows at the Planetarium, an expert live presenter commands the
giant Zeiss projector in the Star Theater's 40-foot-high dome and takes visitors
on a tour of the night sky, pointing out the visible constellations of the
season.
Face of Earth and is recommended for
ages 6 years to adult. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, college
students, and ages 3–18, and free for RMSC members. Beginning March 2, the show
is scheduled for 1pm on Saturdays, with additional shows on school holidays and
1pm shows on the first Sunday of each month. The complete show schedule is at www.rmsc.org.
