Star Show Featuring Orion's
Belt Opens at Rochester Museum & Science Center Strasenburgh Planetarium
ROCHESTER,
NY—The Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) Strasenburgh Planetarium's
star show "Wonders of Orion" takes visitors on a guided tour of the
constellation Orion, The Hunter and his sparkling neighbors in the sky. Orion's
Belt consists of three stars close together in a line—a home base for exploring
the brilliant stars of our winter night sky. The show opens to the public on
Saturday, January 19.
"Winter evenings bring us the brightest, easiest-to-find
constellation in the sky—Orion," said Steve Fentress, director, Strasenburgh
Planetarium, RMSC. "Audience members experience a stunningly accurate night sky
indoors, and explore Orion and surrounding celestial elements. When show-goers
head home, they're able to use what they've learned find Orion and other star
clusters in the real sky."
As
visitors settle into reclining seats under the Star Theater's 40-foot-high
dome, an expert live presenter commands the Planetarium's giant star projector.
Visitors experience an in-depth tour of the Orion neighborhood, with sparkling
star clusters, magnificently bright nebulas, mysterious dark clouds and memorable
stories from history and mythology. With dynamic content, the show is suitable
for beginners as well as experienced sky watchers.
Gorgeous
Hubble Space Telescope pictures are projected at huge scale on the Planetarium
dome, allowing audience members to take a tour of must-see destinations in the
sky. These include fascinating areas in Orion, Taurus, Canis Major and other
nearby constellations such as the sparkly Seven Sisters, angry Aldebaran, the
creepy Crab Pulsar, red giant Betelgeuse, and nighttime's brightest star,
Sirius, also known as "the scorching one."
"Wonders
of Orion" lasts approximately one hour and is recommended for ages 6 years to
adult. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, college students, and ages
3–18, and free for RMSC members. Beginning January 19, the show is scheduled
for 1pm on Saturdays, with additional shows on school holidays. The complete
show schedule is at www.rmsc.org.
