Winter Comes Exciting Outdoor Activities at the Rochester Museum & Science
Center Cumming Nature Center
ROCHESTER,
NY—Visitors to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) Cumming Nature
Center (CNC) experience invigorating winter activities in the snow-covered
Finger Lakes region. Opening Wednesday, December 26, the 900-acre CNC features
a variety of special programs inspiring visitors of all ages to come out and
enjoy a winter adventure. Activities include:
Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing
Wednesday, December 26, 2012–Sunday, March 3, 2013
Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy 15 miles of Cumming Nature Center
trails groomed and open for cross-country skiing (weather permitting) and a three-mile loop of beautiful land for
snowshoeing. The public can experience the CNC five days a week:
9am–3:30pm, Wednesday–Friday; 9am–4:30pm Saturday and Sunday.
Admission is free
for RMSC members. A donation of $3 per person or $10 per family is requested
for the general public.
Equipment rentals available: Ski package (skis, poles and shoes)
$15 per day; Snowshoes $5 per day. Hiking trails are available if there is
insufficient snow for skiing.
Family Fun in the Winter Woods
Wednesday, December 26: 11am–12pm
Enjoy exciting activities along the Helen Gordon Trail. Spy
on springtails (little creepy, crawlers!), pretend to walk in the hooves of a
deer searching for food and stalk the Wild Horse Hoof Fungus, among other adventures.
Dress according to the weather conditions. Reservations are appreciated as the
size of the group is limited. Call (585)374-6160.

Senior Snowshoe Sojourn (Easy Pace)
Wednesday, January 9: 9:30–10:30am
Wednesday, February 6: 9:30–10:30am
Breathe in the crisp outdoor air and journey along a
beautiful snow-covered trail at the CNC with senior naturalist Shariee
Edersheim. "Mrs. E" takes visitors on an informative, hour-long snowshoe
adventure.

for the general public.
Wilderness Guided Hike (Vigorous Pace)
Saturday, January 19: 10am–12:30pm
Saturday, February 16: 10am–12:30pm
Dave Gotham, CNC director, guides visitors on a three-mile,
rugged hike in a pristine and rarely visited area of the CNC. Hikers climb from
an elevation of 1700 feet to 2200 feet—a rigorous trek that's not for the
faint-hearted! This may be a snowshoe hike (weather permitting), so visitors
are encouraged to bring their own or rent them at the CNC.

Nordic Hot Dog Days
Saturday, February 23: 11:30am–3pm
Sunday, February 24: 11:30am–3pm
Visitors enjoy hot dogs, chili, cookies, brownies and hot
cider. This is a fantastic fundraiser is for the Genesee Valley Nordic Ski
Patrol, whose volunteers monitor the CNC ski trails on weekends and help to
provide a safe and pleasant experience for visitors.

The
Cumming Nature Center is open 9am–3:30pm,
Wednesday–Friday and 9am–4:30pm, Saturday and Sunday. The CNC is closed New
Year's Day, January 1, 2013.
