Community Celebrates
Rochester Museum & Science Center 100th Birthday on September 13
ROCHESTER,
NY—The Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) invites the community to
join members, donors, local leaders and staff to celebrate its 100th
birthday on Thursday, September 13. On this day in 1912, the RMSC opened its
doors to the public. The RMSC will be celebrating its centennial theme,
"discovery goes on."
At
the celebration, visitors will enjoy all the exciting hands-on experiences that
the Museum has to offer as well as special perks. All community members who
attend will enjoy free admission,
party hats and birthday
cake, and help the RMSC honors its past and look forward to
the next 100 years of discovery, exploration and inspiration.
After proclamations presented by Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks
and Mayor Thomas Richards at 2pm, the cake will be cut and served. Each family
in attendance will receive a free white pine seedling tree to plant where they
wish. The white pine has been an abundant tree in the region for more than
7,000 years. Native peoples and European settlers all revered and used the tree
for its many valued parts. By planting the white pine, we salute our past and
take positive steps to prepare for our future. Trees are vital to our environment.
The event will also celebrate the return
of the giant RMSC traveling birthday cake to the Museum, ending its nine-week
tour. The six-foot-by-eight-foot cake replica is
currently moving to new locations in Rochester each Monday, and started with
the RMSC's very first home—Edgerton Park. Community members are invited to look
for the cake, engage in social media and participate in trivia to win prizes.
This cake symbolizes the RMSC's gratitude for the longevity of community
support.
"At
the RMSC, we evolve to meet the needs of the greater Rochester community and
serve as a gathering place where experiences spark conversations and interest
in lifelong learning," said Kate Bennett, president, RMSC. "The community has
inspired us to create experiences that unleash each visitor's curiosity. We
pledge to continue to create bright futures for the next 100 years. Today, take
the time to celebrate the past, present and future of RMSC."
Community
members are also invited to purchase tickets to the RMSC's September 29 gala
themed, The Big Bang: The Ball That
Starts it All. A futuristic celebration, the fundraising event starts at 6pm
on the RMSC campus. Honorary chairs include John and Eileen Riedman. Chairs include
RMSC board member, Wendy Dworkin, and board chair, Andrew Meloni. A party of
"galactic proportions," the gala celebrates the RMSC's 100 years of showcasing
scientific discovery and innovation.
At the gala, the RMSC will
unveil strategic plans on its new look and expanded building, as well as ways
the Museum plans to enhance the visitor experience to continue growing the
institution as a local treasure and regional destination. Tickets for the gala
are $200 per person, and can be purchased by contacting Courtney Cornell at
(585)899-3260 or courtney_cornell@dixonschwabl.com.
The gala's intergalactic sponsor is Canandaigua National Bank & Trust
Company. Galaxy sponsors include The Pike Company and COMIDA. Discovery
sponsors include Harter Secrest & Emery LLP, Greater Rochester Visitors
Association, LLD Enterprises, Riedman Foundation and Elaine P. and Richard U.
Wilson Foundation.
