Rochester Museum &
Science Center 3-D
Technology Expo Explores the Future of
Imaging
ROCHESTER,
NY—Visitors to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) explore 3-D
imaging, technology, art and science at 3-D Technology Expo, and see one of the event's
highlights: the RMSC's new MakerBot ™robot—the ultimate 3-D printer. The event
takes place from 12–4pm Saturday, August 18 through
Sunday, August 26. The event is part of the RMSC centennial celebration as the
Museum honors its past and looks forward to the future of discovery and
inspiration.
"The
world of 3-D is fascinating to so many people because we're often used to
consuming media and other types of visual information in 2-D," said Calvin
Uzelmeier, Ph. D and director of education, RMSC. "Community members are able
to explore old and new ways of 3-D visualization in a number of fun ways,
create their own 3-D art, and perhaps become inspired to take it a step further
into the direction of innovation."
During
3-D Technology Expo, visitors will
explore their creative side and participate in several activities. Interactive
opportunities are included below:
- Meet a Hollywood sculptor who grew up in Rochester, Duncan
Crawford. Join in on a Skype
session at 1:30pm on Sunday, August 19 with Duncan in the Bausch Auditorium and
learn about the 3-D sculpting he has done for blockbuster movies like Thor, Super 8, Green Lantern, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Avengers. See some of his amazing work and get your questions answered
by Duncan himself! (http://skulboyfilmwork.blogspot.com/)
- Explore what a trained professional could do with
1,000 KEVA Planks. Visitors can check
out KEVA creations from LaBella Associates P.C., SWBR
Architecture, Engineering & Landscape Architecture P.C., Bergmann
Associates Architects/Engineers/Planners, and other architecture firms from around
Rochester to see the science that goes into their art.
- See the amazing toothpick sculptures of Stan Munro, and watch him
construct Yankee Stadium as he rebuilds the world, one toothpick at a time. (http://www.toothpickcity.com/)
- See the new MakerBotTM robot in action. This 3-D printer can
print anything with its easy-to-use software. Some lucky visitors may have the
opportunity to bring their own creation to life!
- Creating sidewalk art around the RMSC with 3-D chalk.
- Make 3-D holograms with materials from Ward's Natural Science.
- View stereoscopic images from the RMSC's collection to learn how people
have been creating 3-D images for nearly 180 years.
- Meet stereoscopic photographers from our community and learn about the
technology they use to make their amazing images.
- Experience new 3-D visualization technology from Xerox Corporation and,
on select days, take a 3-D fly-over of Mars with 3-D visualization technology
from RIT's Insight Lab.
- Explore the KEVA Planks
exhibit. Visitors can build their own masterpiece with wooden construction
blocks. Attendees can use "idea card" to get started, study one of the display
pieces by structure artists to gain inspiration, or just let their creative
juices flow.
- Play with the K'NEX exhibit—where visitors
become engineers! Participants can build trucks, towers—anything
imaginable—with this colorful construction toy.

demonstrates the RMSC strategy of shared learning and building
futures in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) via fun and
educational experiences.
