Rochester Museum &
Science Center Celebrates Its Centennial With a Big Bang and a Powerful Focus
on the Next 100 Years
ROCHESTER, NY — The
Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) is thrilled to announce plans for
its centennial celebration. Thursday, September 13, 2012, marks 100 years from
the day the Rochester Museum & Science Center opened its doors to the
public. The RMSC has created the "Discovery Goes On" theme to help recognize
the centennial. To celebrate, the
RMSC invites community members to join the fun and celebrate through various
activities, events and opportunities over the next year. The RMSC plans to honor its past and
look forward to the next 100 years of discovery, exploration and inspiration.

Over the next few
months, the RMSC will continue to emphasize its focus of community-shared
learning via hands-on science and technology experiences. In the near future, the RMSC will be
unveiling strategic plans on its new look and expanded building to enhancing
the visitor experience, as well as boost the economic value of the region. This
expansion and defined educational focus further enhances the museum experience
and level of expertise.
"We've reached a milestone
and are excited to celebrate our achievements, as well as our new, intense
focus on science, technology, engineering and math, with the community," said
Kate Bennett, RMSC president. "Visitors will discover enhanced exhibit
experiences that include exciting hands-on components that facilitate social
interaction. Our centennial year is best described as a 'big bang' on so many
levels, and we're propelling forward quickly with our brand and strategic
initiatives."
To better serve the
people of Rochester, the RMSC has defined three focal points in terms of
community needs and the visitor experience. Moving forward, the RMSC is
strategically dedicating resources to serve three inter-related purposes:
1.
To build futures in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) via fun
and educational experiences
2.
To provide a community gathering place where visitors participate in shared
learning
3.
To boost the local economy
In support of these
three focuses, the RMSC plans to bring exciting exhibits to Rochester to
encourage repeat visitors. These visitors will enjoy unique experiences with
compelling collections of items that encourage learning through active
engagement. The RMSC is partnering to develop tomorrow's workforce, boost
regional tourism and ignite Rochester's future innovators.
"We celebrate the efforts of the many
people that came before us and those with us today who are helping us create a
spectacular visitor experience," added Bennett. "We hear from visitors, former
RMSC preschoolers and campers who have grown into builders, scientists,
engineers, naturalists and leaders of all kinds. We're continuing to inspire.
Now that's something to celebrate."

Message
Rochester
Museum & Science Center
In this centennial year, we honor our past and look forward
to the next 100 years of discovery, exploration and inspiration. One thing is
certain – Discovery Goes On! We invite community members to celebrate our
birthday with us through various activities with a focus on
community-shared learning via hands-on science and technology experiences that
will have visitors coming back for more.
We have three focal points in terms of community needs and the visitor
experience that are a strong concentration, now more than ever, in the
centennial year. The RMSC is strategically dedicating its resources to serve
three inter-related purposes:
1. To build futures in science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM) via fun and educational experiences.
2. To provide a community
gathering place where visitors participate in shared learning.
3. To boost the local economy.
In support of these three focuses, the RMSC plans to bring exciting
exhibits to Rochester to encourage repeat visitors. These visitors will enjoy unique experiences with compelling
collections of items encouraging learning through active engagement. The RMSC
is partnering to develop tomorrow's workforce, boost regional tourism, and
ignite Rochester's future innovators.
In addition, the RMSC will unveil strategic plans on its new look, and
continue enhancing the visitor experience as well as boosting the economic
value of the region. Festivities represent the RMSC centennial theme of
"Discovery Goes On," and take place starting in June 2012 and continue through
September 13, 2013—its 101st birthday. Some highlights included
below:
-Special private and public events
including our birthday celebration on September 13, 2012. Celebrate publicly
with cake, State/County/City representatives and proclamations, and then
privately in the evening with staff and their families. (Addresses all three
Focal Points)
-Spectacular gala event on September 29
called "The Big Bang: The Ball That Starts It All" thrusts us into the future. Sneak-peeks
to our strategic plans during this exciting, multi-sensory extravaganza.
(Addresses all three Focal Points)
-Come Build
With Us — KEVA Planks building exhibit experience.
June 2–September 3, 2012: Encourages visitors to use their imagination and challenge
their building and creative skills. (Addresses Focal Points #1 and #2)
-New programs clearly show our
strategy—such as the NASA family program in July. First program created for
families, by families. RMSC and partners lead the way toward next steps in
discovering new planets and moons. (Addresses Focal Point #2)
-A T. Rex Named Sue exhibit: October 6, 2012–January 6, 2013.
Traveling blockbuster exhibits draw strong numbers to the RMSC, increase
tourism dollars and, therefore, boost the local economy. (Addresses Focal Point
#3)
-RACE: Are We So Different? exhibit:
January 26–April 28, 2013. Explores the stories of race from
biological, cultural and historical points of view. (Addresses Focal Point #2)
At the RMSC, we grow future life-long
learners: builders, scientists, engineers, naturalists
leaders of all kinds. We
build careers and futures. That's something to celebrate. Visit often this year
as Discovery Goes On!
