3-D TECHNOLOGY EXPO

Saturday, August 18–Sunday, August 26: 12-4pm

Have fun exploring your creative side and learn about the latest 3-D imaging technologies. Build with KEVA Planks or K'NEX, make art with 3-D chalk, and check out cool KEVA creations from architects and builders from around Rochester to see the science that goes into their art. Also, come see our new MakerBot^TM robot, the ultimate 3-D printer. View stereoscopic images from the RMSC's collection to learn how people have been creating 3-D images for nearly 180 years. Embark on a virtual voyage to Mars—a high-tech, hands-on simulation. Located in the Strasenburgh Planetarium and coordinated by "Mission Commanders" from Monroe #1 BOCES, this unique experience is educational and fun. Children must be at least 7 years old. Children between ages 7 and 10 must be teamed one-on-one with an adult.

KEVA Planks—Come build with us!

Location: Patricia F. Hale Hands-on Gallery

Construct wooden masterpieces of all shapes and sizes with KEVA Planks, a building exhibit experience. KEVA Planks is part of the RMSC centennial celebration. Precision cut, identical construction blocks, KEVA Planks are hard maple and stack with surprising stability. No glue or connectors are involved. Using only gravity, visitors dabble with physics in order to achieve balance, optimum proportion and strength. Create anything from simple stacks, to castles, bridges and trains, to full scenes such as landscapes, farms or arenas. Weekly community build challenges will take place throughout July and August. Build the sturdiest platform, the safest bridge span or the best furniture set. New challenges take place each week. Discover the topic via the RMSC Facebook page.

Dive to the bottom of Lake Ontario in the Deep Submergence Vehicle simulator. Test your strength on the Genesee Gorge climbing wall. Explore Rochester weather. Experiment with wind currents, stream erosion, and more.

Raceways

Discover the principles of moving objects. Experiment with momentum, friction, gravity, and acceleration as you send wooden balls looping and racing over ramps.

Flight to Freedom: Rochester's Underground Railroad -- Presented with support from the City of Rochester and the Underground Railroad Heritage Trail, a program of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

Explore stories of courageous African Americans who traveled through Rochester on their way from slavery to freedom. Find out about local people who helped them.

At the Western Door

The hundreds of objects displayed show the Seneca's and Haudenosaunee's creative response to new technologies and materials introduced following European contact. Clan and family continue to bind communities together and define who the Seneca and Haudenosaunee are.

"Astronaut Mission: The Future"

Discover what's coming up soon in space travel. Look beyond at asteroids, other planets and their moons as possible targets. Explore whether far-out dreams such as warp drive or faster-than-light travel could ever be possible.

"Saturday Sun, Moon and Stars"

Length: 45 min. For ages 5 to 7 and the adults with them.

This relaxed, enjoyable family show presents prominent constellations and takes the audience on a quick trip to the moon. See what Earth looks like from a quarter million miles away, and return home in time for sunrise.

Saturday Night Laser Show

Classic and modern rock music choreographed with intensely colorful laser light fills the starry dome of the Planetarium. Show themes change monthly. Check www.rmsc.org to confirm artists and playlists.

Location: CNC Hurst Gallery



Volunteers for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Natural Heritage Program survey, Vici Zaremba and Steve Diehl have spent thousands of hours surveying and photographing dragonflies and damselflies. The Dragonflies and Damselflies exhibition is a celebration of the almost magical qualities of dragonflies, damselflies and their habitats. Steve is a photographic instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Vici serves as an environmental consultant and board member of the Indian River Lakes Conservancy in Redwood, New York.

IDENTIFICATION SERIES (Part 3)

Shairee Edersheim* guides you on a three-part journey into the wonderful world of wildflowers, trees and ferns. Edersheim also provides a brief explanation of the use of field guides.

SENIOR SOJOURN (Easy Pace)

Wednesday, August 15: 11am–12pm

Experience summer at Cumming Nature Center with Shairee Edersheim.* "Mrs. E" takes you on an informative and easy, hour-long walk to marvel at the spectacular sights and sounds of summer. Bring a lunch if you'd like, and then walk another trail.

Program fee: Free for RMSC members; $3 per person or $10 per family is requested for general public.

SERENDIPITY WALK (Moderate Pace)

Saturday, August 18: 11am–2pm

Enjoy a guided walk with Shairee Edersheim* as she takes you to areas of Cumming Nature Center typically not accessible to the public. Attendees experience different types of terrain, including wet areas, so wear the proper footwear. Bringing a lunch to enjoy with great company is an option.

Program fee: Free for RMSC members; $3 per person or $10 per family is requested for general public.

WILDERNESS WALK (Vigorous Pace)

Saturday, August 25: 10am–2pm

Bring your sense of adventure with you and enjoy a hike off the beaten path with CNC staff. Experience the outdoors as you explore areas of the property not typically accessible to the public, and discover fascinating tales of the region's history. A light lunch awaits you at a rustic cabin.
Program fee: $10 per person, including members. Reservations are required by calling (585)374-6160.

*Shariee Edersheim (Mrs. "E") serves as a senior naturalist at RMSC Cumming Nature Center. Edersheim was the lead interpreter at CNC in the 1980s and early 1990s. Edersheim leads several walks including senior sojourn, serendipity walk, among others.
