New Star Show at Rochester Museum
& Science Center Strasenburgh Planetarium Explores the Next Generation of
Space Travel
ROCHESTER, NY—What will it be like
to fly in space in the future? Astronaut
Mission: The Future, the new
family-friendly star show at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC)
Strasenburgh Planetarium, answers that question with exciting new
visualizations of today's new generation of space vehicles. Visitors experience
this celestial show in the Planetarium's four-story dome starting July 2. Astronaut Mission: The Future is part of
the RMSC centennial celebration as the Museum demonstrates
that discovery goes on.
"If you ask kids what they would like to do in the future, flying in
space is always near the top of the list," said Steve Fentress, director,
Strasenburgh Planetarium, RMSC. "In Astronaut
Mission: The Future, we'll help visitors imagine themselves flying in one
of the new spaceships now under development or on the drawing board."
During Astronaut Mission: The Future, the newest HD videos and visualizations from NASA and from private
companies such as SpaceX and Virgin Galactic will supply the most accurate
possible views of the spaceships that today's children might fly when they're
grown. The show will also look beyond to asteroids, other planets and their moons
as possible targets of exploration. It will touch on such popular topics as
warp drive and faster-than-light travel and ask if they could come true. Like
all star shows at RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium, Astronaut Mission: The Future
includes a point-out of currently visible stars, planets and constellations,
using the Planetarium's giant star projector.
Astronaut Mission: The Future opens July
2 at the Strasenburgh Planetarium and will be shown Mondays through Saturdays
at alternating 11am and 1pm times all summer. Visit www.rmsc.org for full, and most up-to-date, show
schedule.
Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors
and college students with ID, $6 for children and teens (ages 5–18) and free
for RMSC members. Tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.rmsc.org (online ticket purchases must be
made at least 24 hours prior to the show), at the Museum Welcome Center (museum
lobby) during regular business hours, or at the Planetarium Box Office. Check
the show schedule at www.rmsc.org for
details. Astronaut Mission: The Future
is recommended for ages six years through adult. All Strasenburgh Planetarium
shows are sponsored by Time Warner Cable.
This
year, the RMSC celebrates 100 years of service to the community. Astronaut Mission: The Future is part of
the celebration as the RMSC honors its past and looks forward to the next 100
years of discovery, exploration and inspiration. Visit www.rmsc.org for more information.
