ROCHESTER,
NY—Our prehistoric past lives today in dragonflies and damselflies. Visitors discover the wonder of these
stunning insects by experiencing a new photography exhibit at Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) Cumming Nature
Center (CNC). Dragonflies and Damselflies,
an exhibit by Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) professor Stephen
Diehl, will be on display from Saturday, June 23 through Sunday, September 2 in
the CNC Hurst Gallery. Special activities take place on opening day.
The Dragonflies and Damselflies exhibition is a celebration of the almost magical qualities of
dragonflies, damselflies and their habitats. The prints capture the spectacular
hues and amazing detail of these flying jewels that even existed more than 350
million years ago.
On opening day, Saturday, June 23, visitors can view a continuous slide show in the
Riedman Theater of dragonfly and damselfly images from 2-4:30pm. Visitors can also enjoy a nature walk devoted to dragonflies and
damselflies (weather permitting) from 3-4:30pm.
Dragonflies
and damselflies have fascinated Vici Zaremba and Steve Diehl for years. As
volunteers for the now completed New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC) Natural Heritage Program survey, they spent thousands of
hours surveying and photographing dragonflies and damselflies. Their work
continues as founding members of the New York Odonate Group in coordination
with New York Natural Heritage Program (NYNHP) and the Adirondack All Taxa
Biodiversity Inventory.
Diehl
is an associate professor at the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at RIT
and Zaremba serves as an environmental consultant and board member of the
Indian River Lakes Conservancy in Redwood, New York.
Admission is free for RMSC members. A $3 per person or $10
per family charge is requested for the general public.
