Discover Ways to
Protect the Environment During Earth Day Celebration at Rochester Museum &
Science Center
ROCHESTER,
NY—Achieving sustainability will
enable the Earth to continue supporting human life as we know it.
Visitors to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) during its Earth
Day 2012 celebration explore fun ways to protect our environment and
become sustainable. Earth Day celebration takes place from 12-4pm on Saturday,
April 21–Sunday, April 22.
Community members explore hands-on experiments and other activities presented by the
members of the Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society. Visitors can
expect to:
- Rethink recycling and learn that it's easy to be "green."
- Learn how chemists promote a better
world through recyclable plastics, cleaner-burning fuels, phosphate-free
detergents, environmental monitoring, and "green" chemistry initiatives.
- Investigate humankind's effect on
waterways with the Enviroscape and Flood Plain
models, from Monroe County's Stormwater Coalition and the Water Education
Collaborative.
- Discover how they can get involved and help show their support
for a healthy environment, raise awareness about environmental issues, and
remind people that we all need to contribute to a sustainable planet.
Visitors
are also invited to experience Extreme
Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time in the
Riedman Gallery, which closes April 15. Featuring spectacular
specimens from New York City's American Museum of Natural History, the
exhibition examines the ancestry and evolution of numerous species through
fossils, skeletons, vivid mammal reconstructions as well as objects from
Rochester Museum & Science Center collections. Species range from huge to
tiny, from speedy to sloth-like, and display characteristics such as oversized
claws, fangs, snouts and horns.
Programs
are free, unless otherwise specified, with regular Museum admission: $12
adults, $11 seniors and college students with ID, $10 ages 3 to 18, free for
