Third Graders to Share
Knowledge on Native American Life with Visitors at the Rochester Museum &
Science Center
ROCHESTER,
NY—The third grade class from the Genesee Community
Charter School (GCCS) at the
Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) will act as docents in an effort
to hone skills and share their knowledge with community members. Museum docents
are educators trained to further
the public's understanding of collections and exhibits. The third graders will interact with
visitors in the Native American dioramas exhibit between 10am and 4pm on
Saturday, March 17.
After research on how Native Americans from different parts of
North America met their needs for survival, the third graders found that where people lived greatly affected how they lived. Visitors
should expect to learn details on this research, as well as other important
components to the lives of Native Americans. Also, with the help of RMSC adult docents, students learned the skills of being a talented docent. The
Native American dioramas are located on the Museum's second floor.
"Our students are excited to share what they've learned with their
local community and to do so in a creative way," said Spero Michailidis, third
grade teacher, GCCS. "We are also grateful to the RMSC for their continued
support, and for the rich learning opportunities they provide for our students
and our community. We hope that many people attend since there is so much to
learn from our third grade docents."
Located on the RMSC campus, GCCS is an expeditionary
learning school. Students study single themes or topics in-depth for generally twelve
weeks at a time, integrating social studies, science, mathematics, literacy and
language arts into their learning expedition. Students at all levels
investigate the natural, social, political and economic history of our
community. As they advance, they make increasingly complex global comparisons
and connections.
Docent tours are free with regular Museum
admission: $12 adults, $11 seniors & college students with ID, $10 ages 3
to 18, free for children under 3 and RMSC members. Museum admission with Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, and
Most Amazing Mammals of All Time is $15 for adults, $14 for seniors/college
students with ID, $13 for ages 3–18, $3 for RMSC members, and free for children
under 3.
