2012: Fact or Fiction? New Star Show at Rochester Museum
& Science Center Strasenburgh Planetarium Skeptically Explores Mysteries About
the End of Time
ROCHESTER, NY—The intriguing new star show at the
Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) Strasenburgh Planetarium, 2012:
Fact or Fiction?, takes a skeptical approach to the hot-button mysteries
associated with the year 2012 and the "end of time." The Internet and rumor
mills are full of notions about potential disasters this year. Will a "Planet X"
or "Nibiru" sideswipe Earth? Will Earth's poles flip? Does the classic Maya
calendar of Central America predict a calamity on December 21, 2012? Will the
planets line up, and what would happen if they did? Visitors explore these
questions and others in the stellar environment of the Planetarium starting
February 18.
"People trust what they learn from Strasenburgh Planetarium shows, and
we take that seriously," said Steve Fentress, director, Strasenburgh
Planetarium. "We'll have a fun during this show while also remembering that
some people, children and adults alike, are scared about the rumors floating
around in the open marketplace. With a calm look at what's being said and by
whom, and with some pointers to good information, we'll take home a greater
appreciation for the real universe and worry less about weird conjectures."
Visitors discover what is real and what is bogus during this unique
experience under the starry indoor sky. How do you decide what and whom to
believe? The show explores the 2012 phenomenon, how it got started, and how viewers
can check alarming claims for themselves. Like all star shows at RMSC
Strasenburgh Planetarium, 2012: Fact or Fiction? includes a point-out of
currently visible stars, planets and constellations, using the Planetarium's
giant star projector.
2012:
Fact or Fiction? opens February 18 at the Strasenburgh Planetarium and
appears Saturdays at 1pm, with additional weekday performances during school
vacation weeks. Visit www.rmsc.org for full
show schedule.
Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors
