Visitors
can now enjoy an extended, three-mile-long, snowshoe trail
ROCHESTER,
NY—Visitors to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) Cumming Nature
Center (CNC) experience invigorating winter activities in the snow-covered
Finger Lakes region and also enjoy a new extended snowshoe trail. Opening
December 28, the CNC features a variety of special programs inspiring visitors
of all ages to come out and enjoy a winter adventure. Activities include:
Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing
Wednesday, December 28, 2011–Sunday, March 4, 2012
Outdoor enthusiasts can now enjoy our Bluebird Trail as well
as the 15 miles of Cumming Nature Center trails groomed and open for
cross-country skiing (weather permitting) and a now three-mile loop (extended from two
miles) of beautiful land exists for snowshoeing. The public can experience the
CNC five days a week: 9 am–3:30pm, Wednesday–Friday; 9am–4:30pm Saturday
and Sunday.
Admission is free
for RMSC members. A donation of $3 per person or $10 per family is requested
for the general public.
Equipment rentals available: Ski package (skis, poles and shoes)
$15 per day; Snowshoes $5 per day.
Volunteers from the Genesee Valley Nordic Ski Patrol will
monitor the ski trails on weekends. Hiking trails are
available if there is insufficient snow for skiing.
Family Fun in the Winter Woods
Wednesday, December 28: 11am–12pm
Enjoy exciting activities along the Helen Gordon Trail. Spy
on springtails (little creepy, crawlys!), pretend to walk in the hooves of a
deer searching for food and stalk the Wild Horse Hoof Fungus. There is plenty
to discover outside in the winter. Dress according to the weather conditions.

Senior Snowshoe Sojourn
Wednesday, January 11: 11am–12pm
Wednesday, February 8: 11am–12pm
Breathe in the crisp outdoor air and journey along a
beautiful snow-covered trail at the CNC with our own senior naturalist Shariee
Edersheim. "Mrs. E" takes visitors on an informative, hour-long snowshoe
adventure. Visitors are invited to bring a lunch if they desire and stay for a
nature film in the Riedman Theater.

Guided Hikes
Saturday, January 21: 10am–1pm
Saturday, February 18: 10am–1pm
Dave Gotham, CNC director, guides visitors on a three-mile
rugged hike in a rarely visited, pristine area of the nature center. Hikers
climb from an elevation of 1700 feet to 2200 feet—a rigorous trek that's not
for the faint-hearted! The workout ends at the visitor's center where visitors
can relax by a cozy fire and enjoy a light lunch. This may be a snowshoe hike
(weather permitting), so visitors are encouraged to bring their own or rent
them at the CNC.

Nordic Hot Dog Days
Saturday, February 11: 12–3pm
Sunday, February 12: 12–3pm
Visitors enjoy hot dogs, chili, cookies, brownies and hot
cider. This is a fantastic fund-raiser is for the Genesee Valley Nordic Ski
Patrol, whose volunteers monitor the CNC ski trails on weekends and help to
provide a safe and pleasant experience for visitors.

Night Ski
Saturday, February 11: 5–7:30pm
Members of the Genesee Valley Nordic Ski Patrol lead
cross-country skiers on an evening trek under the stars on the CNC trails.
After the outdoor journey, skiers return to the visitor's center for a light
dinner.
Admission/Costs: RMSC members and general public:
$15 per person
Ski rental: $15 per pair
Since the group size is limited, reservations and
prepayment are required. No refunds unless the program in cancelled.
